Artist's Comments

EDIT: Full view please! Changed/fixed a few things on the image. Why do pngs look so fucked in the smaller view? :<

Image is made so you can flip it whichever way you'd like. I'd like to make some prints of this sooner or later. ;X

I'm sure most of you WoW nerds know who is on the left in red. The one on the right is Argent Confessor Paletress.
They have an almost identical model in game, and their names are similar. Blizzard makes parodies of their own npcs apparently!

Anyway, I had to do some fanart of them together. I'm going to lay off the WoW/RO art for a while and focus on some original stuff. Really need to get back in the habit!

Critique on cause uh.. I need it! :) Glaring anatomy problems aside, I'd like to know what you guys think.

Love it and do agree these girls should be seen together more often!

I don't have a paid account, so I can't do a proper Critique(tm), but I don't know if I have enough material for a proper Critique(tm) anyway, so I'm dumping all this in a normal comment instead. Here are some things I think this picture would benefit from:

There's an overall lack of dimensionality in a lot of the round shapes in this picture. In some areas this is a matter of the tones being used for shading, such as around the shoulders and hips; there isn't a dramatic enough difference in the values between the recessed portions, where the shapes are curving away from the viewer, and the lighter areas facing outward. Applying shadows more assertively would go a long way towards improving this.

Same issue with the shadows behind them- they're very light, and hard to notice, so they come across less as shadows against some sort of surface and more like variation in an abstract space. That's a perfectly valid way to approach the background, of course, especially with a picture that seems more like an idea (a comparison and contrast between the characters rather than the description of a specific scene). Still, as it stands, the background doesn't really commit to one idea or the other. If you do want it to look more like a surface on which they are lying, don't be afraid to intensify the shadows beneath them, especially in those spots with upraised and overhanging forms (raised limbs, or around the cavity created by the curvature of the spine when one is lying back flat, for example.) (Also, it looks like you missed a few floor spots around where Whitemane's hair interacts with her shoulders.)

Another way in which the dimensionality suffers is in how some shapes are being drawn- at least in the case of their hats. Along the inside edges of the hats, you've drawn a thick, golden border that doesn't seem to have a symmetrical counterpart on the other, outward-facing side of the hat; it seems less like a description of an actual gold-trimmed seam in the object itself, and more like a two-dimensional border between the drawing of the hat and the background, made to delineate the two. The appearance of that outer face of the hat suggests that any gold seam on the inner face of the hat would be hidden behind its curve.

Their overall placement seems a bit off-center; Whitemane has a lot more leg room than Paletress, and the negative space around Paletress seems a bit cramped compared to that around Whitemane's head and shoulder. I think the left border of the picture could be brought in to just past Whitemane's elbow; it would clip it a bit, sure, but it would make for an overall more confined space and better emphasize the interaction of the character's bodies. (... which sounds a bit kinky, admittedly, which wasn't my intent. But I figure with a pose like this, the way the two bodies intersect with one another is of key importance.)

That's all that comes to mind, really. The white backdrop seems a bit cold, but that's likely just a result of all that empty space around Whitemane. I'm not seeing any glaring anatomical problem (Paletress's eyes seem a little widely-spaced, but it doesn't really bother me at all). Their figures are a bit exagerated, but it's well within the cartoony style of the picture, and they're both oh so pretty.~

I really do like it! I hope my suggestions did not suggest otherwise. I especially enjoy the richness of the reds and golds, particularly the latter, which manages to skillfully avoid the whole "yellow = gold" problem I think a lot of more cartoony and abstract illustration styles risk. I also like your style itself; the characters manage to be highly expressive without undue exaggeration. And it's also incredibly hot, which I at least think deserves recognition.

Ah, thank you! :)

I always seem to miss random little errors, like the hat, etc. I'll probably fix that up here shortly.

Coloring really isn't my strong point, so I appreciate the critique! I'll def go back later and try to add more shadows.
It really needs some sort of background too, they're not really laying on anything. I just cheaped out and painted a little blue behind them for a little color. Hah. :( I totally agree with you on the whole white background being really cold.

Its a bit off center, but I think I may remedy that soon. =)

I can't critique worth a damn since I'm definitely no artist, but I love your version of Whitemane! :D All the other ones I've seen have been really uh... revealing, lol.

As for RO, have you heard of a game coming out called Aion? RO was my first MMO and I'm totally playing Aion for the nostalgia factor since they're both kind of similar... not to mention the orgasmic character creation process. xD
:iconkayley:
Haha yeah.. I preordered it a while back. I'm playing it with a lot of my RO friends actually, the similarities of the game are what's making some of attracted to it. lol
:iconbodice:
Haha, nice. :D I'm on a forum for people who plan on roleplaying in it once it goes live, I can't wait! :excited: What race are you going to be playing as?
:iconkayley:
I think we're all going to be Elyos. Not really sure yet. :) I'll probably end up playing both semi casually.
:iconbodice:
Haha, yeah, same here. I'll be playing Elyos on whatever server the community picks as the 'unofficial' RP one and then make an Asmodian on another just for kicks. So far I really love the Chanter class, I think I'm going to try a Ranger during open beta though.
:iconrandom-ninja:
Paletress needs more love. She's got some great dialogue.

And now she's an even more awesome boss then Whitemane!
